Braces are not just for kids anymore. At Dr. Kellyn Hodges’ orthodontic practice in Philadelphia, we offer a variety of orthodontic treatments that are designed to meet the needs of patients from all ages. Adult patients should consider braces because a beautiful, straight smile can boost patients’ self-confidence and give them a better quality of life.
Dr. Hodges: “Adults are definitely embracing orthodontia. Almost 50 percent of our patient population is adult at this point. A lot of people think, ‘If I didn’t get it done as a teenager, I missed the boat.’ That is absolutely not true. The body is very resilient, it is pliable, as long as you are relatively healthy, those teeth will move, they will straighten out. Often times, I have adults get to month 6 of their treatment and say, ‘I can’t believe I didn’t do this before now.’ They are so happy and satisfied that they finally did this good thing for themselves. And it really does have wonderful health benefits. When our teeth are aligned and functioning properly, we chew best. When we’re not chewing well, when we’re missing teeth and our teeth have shifted, the food we swallow is not fully chewed and it affects our digestive system. Some people simply feel more confident, so they are performing better on the job. I love some of my adults’ before and afters. The shot shows them one way, and then their after shot is magnificent. They’ve lost 20 pounds, their hair is highlighted, their makeup is fabulous, and their smile is beautiful. And there they go for the rest of their lives. So it’s very, very positive really at any age, and certainly for adults.”
