When is Root Canal Therapy Needed?

Root canal therapy, or endodontic treatment, is necessary when the dental pulp has become infected. This soft tissue lies within the root canals of each tooth.

Signs of Infection

While some patients may not experience any symptoms, there are often noticeable signs that you are suffering from a dental infection:

  • Severe toothache
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures
  • Discoloration of the tooth

If you have any of these concerns, it is essential to bring it to the attention of your doctor as soon as possible. The earlier a root canal infection is treated, the better chance we have of saving the tooth.

Consequences of Untreated Infection

An untreated dental infection can have serious consequences as the bacteria will continue to multiply. This can lead to the development of an abscess, as well as damage to the surrounding soft and hard tissues. In many cases, the tooth must be extracted in order to protect the patient's overall oral health.

Endodontic treatment is completed in several steps.

What to Expect

To begin, the doctor will numb the treatment area and surrounding tissue to ensure your comfort. A small hole will be made in the biting surface of the tooth in order to allow access to the interior portion. Then the infected dental pulp will be removed from the root canals. The inside of the tooth is then thoroughly cleaned and reshaped so that it can be filled with gutta percha, a rubber-like substance, to seal off the root canals.

It is of the utmost importance to address any signs of infection as soon as possible to save your tooth from requiring extraction.

Often, patients are provided with a temporary filling or dental crown at this point until your customized restoration is complete. Depending on the location of the treated tooth, you may prefer an all-porcelain crown for a more natural appearance. During your consultation, we will discuss your options and help you find a solution that provides the best results.

The permanent crown will be cemented in place during a second appointment, usually about two weeks after your initial visit. Afterwards, you can return to your daily activities. You may feel some lingering sensitivity but this should quickly dissipate. Since the source of discomfort has been removed, you should be able to chew and eat more comfortably within a few days.
