Restore Your Smile with Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are used to strengthen and protect damaged teeth while restoring the appearance of your smile. These restorations cover the entire visible portion of a tooth and are custom-crafted to blend with surrounding teeth. They are often the final step in a root canal procedure. At Kellyn Hodges Orthodontics, serving the Philadelphia, PA, area, we can also provide an implant-supported dental crown if you have lost a single tooth. Dr. Kellyn Hodges and her team can examine your smile and coordinate with skilled technicians and oral surgeons to ensure you receive precisely the care you need.

Why Are Dental Crowns Necessary?

Dental crowns can restore the balance and symmetry of your smile after treatment for cavities or trauma. This treatment can also alleviate discomfort, improve your ability to chew comfortably, and help maintain the alignment of your teeth. Leaving a damaged tooth untreated can take a toll on your oral health and cause tooth loss or further decay. We may recommend a crown if you have:

  • Cracked or chipped teeth
  • Severe decay or damage
  • Bite misalignment
  • Worn chewing surfaces

If you have lost a tooth, Dr. Hodges can coordinate with trusted oral surgeons to replace the tooth root with a dental implant designed to support a dental crown. In general, crowns serve practical purposes. However, in some cases, Dr. Hodges may suggest a crown as treatment for teeth that are severely discolored and resistant to professional teeth whitening

Once the decayed or damaged areas of the tooth have been removed, remaining tissue will be reduced in order to accommodate the crown.

The Crown Placement Process

The first step is to schedule an initial consultation at one of our three conveniently located offices. During the appointment, a member of our team will examine your oral health to determine what type of treatment is best suited for your needs. Once any underlying conditions are treated, your tooth will need to be prepared for crown placement. This involves removing any compromised tissue and reshaping the tooth to accommodate the crown. For your comfort, this process is typically performed under local anesthesia.

If you have damaged teeth or are missing a tooth entirely, dental crowns can provide you with significant aesthetic and functional benefits.

Once your tooth is prepared, we can take a series of impressions. These are sent to a lab to guide fabrication. While you wait for your permanent crown, you may need to wear a temporary crown to protect your tooth. The typical turnaround time is two weeks. When your crown is ready, your dentist can check the fit of your crown to ensure it does not disrupt your bite or the appearance of your smile. If no modifications are needed, the crown will be bonded in place.

Maintain Your Results

With proper care, dental crowns can last 10 years or more. It is important to maintain a consistent oral hygiene routine of brushing twice a day and flossing at least once. You should also attend biannual cleanings and examinations. We can recommend the best oral care products and techniques to protect your dental health and your restoration.
