Dr. Kellyn Hodges, DMD, MS, is a board-certified orthodontist and a native Philadelphian. She graduated as valedictorian of the chemistry department at Howard University, then earned her DMD and a master's degree in orthodontics at Temple University. You may also see Dr. Kelly McMonagle, who grew up in Norristown, trained at Temple, and completed her residency at the University of Washington. Dr. Jeannie Wang trained at the University of Pennsylvania and is known for her compassionate approach. Keeping Your Braces 
on Schedule

Most braces cases run 24 to 30 months. Adults who only need the front teeth straightened often finish in 16 to 18 months with fast-acting braces, and Wilckodontics® can shorten the timeline further when it is a good fit.

The key to holding that schedule is showing up. You come in every 4 to 8 weeks for an adjustment, and each visit moves the archwire to the next stage. Skip a stretch of those visits and the finish date moves with you. If something breaks in between, current patients can usually be seen the same day, which keeps a loose bracket from costing you a month.

• What should I do if a bracket comes loose?

  • Call the office at (215) 412-9810 as soon as you notice it, rather than waiting for your next scheduled adjustment. Current patients with an urgent brace problem are usually seen the same day. Save any piece that came off and bring it with you to the appointment, and the team will take it from there.

• Can braces fix problems that clear aligners cannot?

  • Invisalign® works well for mild to moderate cases and is offered here as an alternative. Braces handle the rest, including severe crowding, deep overbites, underbites, open bites, crossbites, and teeth that need to rotate a long way. Because the brackets are fixed to your teeth, they keep working between visits without depending on wear time.

• Is my child too young for braces?

  • Probably not too young for a look. An early evaluation lets the doctor see how the jaw is growing and whether there is room for the permanent teeth. Some children benefit from early guidance, and many are simply watched until the timing is right. The consultation is free either way.

• Will I need a retainer after my braces come off?

  • Yes. Teeth keep shifting throughout life, so the retainer protects the result you spent two years earning. Most patients wear one every night indefinitely. The team fits it right after the braces come off and explains the schedule, and wearing it turns out to be the easiest part of the whole process.
