Wilckodontics vs. Braces: Which Treatment Option Should I Consider By Kellyn Hodges on September 05, 2015

A woman in a white room smilingDr. Kellyn Hodges is proud to provide patients in and around the greater Philadelphia area with advanced orthodontic treatments. This includes traditional braces, invisible braces alternatives, and even Wilckodontics, a fast orthodontic treatment option that accelerates the braces process.

A number of patients have asked us to compare traditional braces treatment to Wilckodontics. Let's take a moment to do that right now.

About Traditional Braces

Traditional braces are a great standby when it comes to orthodontic treatment. Braces will use a combination of brackets, wires, and bands to apply careful pressure to the teeth. By doing so, this will cause the teeth to gradually shift into a straighter and more ideal position. The process will take several months, though more may be required depending on the complexities of the situation and the age of the patient—younger patients typically require less time for treatment than older/adult patients.

Ideal Candidates for Traditional Braces

The best candidates for traditional braces are people who suffer from crooked or poorly aligned teeth. They should have realistic expectations about the treatment process and what it entails and understand all of the risks and benefits involved in treatment.

About Wilckodontics

Wilckodontics is a type of treatment that combines orthodontics with advanced oral surgery. The process is also known as Accelerated Osteogenic Orthodontics (AOO), and will involve revision of the jawbone structure through oral surgery in combination with traditional orthodontic techniques, resulting in an accelerated orthodontic treatment. In other words, Wilckodontics means a much faster orthodontic treatment for patients.

Ideal Candidates for Wilckodontics

Good candidates for Wilckodontics are patients who will be able to tolerate the oral surgery that is required for the process to be performed. This means patients should be in good overall health suc that oral surgery will not post a possible health risk of any kind. Knowing the risks and benefits of Wilckodontics will be very important for optimal healing and patient satisfaction.

The Advantages of Wilckodontics Over Braces

Wilckodontics works far faster than traditional braces treatment. In some cases, the entire treatment process can be completed in about three to eight months. For complicated malocclussion and alignment issues, this means it's four times faster than traditional braces. This is particularly worth noting for major misalignment issues that go beyond mere tooth position.

The Advantages of Braces Over Wilckodontics

While braces are not as fast as Wilckodontics, there are two significant advantages to consider.

First, there is no oral surgery involved with getting braces, which means that the process is less painful than undergoing Wilckodontics treatment. Soreness, bruising, and significant pain are not issues with braces since it's a far less invasive approach to orthodontic care.

Second, getting traditional braces is far less expensive than Wilckodontics. For some patients, in fact, getting Wilckodontics proves cost prohibitive even with dental financing.
