Orthodontic Options for Children and Teens By Kellyn Hodges on January 12, 2013

Philadelphia Braces for ChildrenPhiladelphia orthodontist Kellyn W. Hodges proudly serves patients of all ages, from children and teens to the elderly. By offering the widest possible range of orthodontic treatments, Dr. Hodges is able to serve the needs of the widest possible range of patients, regardless of their oral health needs. Patients of our Philadelphia orthodontics practice can expect no less than exceptional care in a comfortable atmosphere in which their comfort, safety, and satisfaction are our highest priorities.

At our practice, children and teenagers are treated with the same respect, courtesy, and professionalism as our adult patients, but we also cater to the special needs of younger patients. While the ideal time to begin orthodontic treatment varies from patient to patient, all children should have a comprehensive orthodontic screening by the age of seven. If your child has not yet had an orthodontic screening, we strongly encourage you to schedule an appointment for your child with Dr. Hodges as soon as possible.

Once orthodontic treatment is advisable for your child, we offer a range of treatment types, each offering its own benefits for qualified candidates. At our office in Philadelphia, children, orthodontics, and our friendly, personable team make a perfect combination!

Traditional Braces

Although modern orthodontic technology offers a variety of alternatives to metal appliances, traditional braces remain among the most effective oral health treatments in all of dentistry. Aside from being the most economic treatment, traditional metal braces are in some cases also the most effective and efficient treatment, especially in cases of severe misalignment. At our office in Philadelphia, braces are carefully placed using the highest-quality bonding and other materials to ensure the best possible results.

Invisalign® Teen

Don’t let the word “Teen” mislead you; Invisalign® Teen is intended for younger patients whose permanent teeth have erupted, regardless of their age. Patients as young as ten years old, therefore, may be suitable candidates for Invisalign® Teen. Invisalign® uses a series of custom-crafted, clear plastic aligners to gently but surely guide teeth into their proper alignment. Every two weeks or so, the current aligner is replaced by the next in the series. As long as patients wear the aligners as directed, they are perfect for young people on the go, as they can be removed for eating, brushing, and flossing. They are also virtually undetectable when worn, making them the perfect solution for young people who do not wish to wear more conspicuous metal braces.

Wilckodontics®

A revolutionary breakthrough in orthodontic treatment, Wilckodontics® focuses pressure on the structure of the bone underlying the teeth rather than on the teeth, themselves. In many cases, Wilckodontics® can produce outstanding results in roughly a quarter of the time required by other orthodontic treatments. Not all young patients are good candidates for the procedure, however. It is an effective treatment for some teenagers. Dr. Hodges will perform an extensive evaluation before even considering Wilckodontics® for younger patients.

Orthodontic Retainer Treatment

In cases of minor misalignment, it may be possible for a child or teen to bypass braces altogether and achieve good results wearing only a retainer. In some cases, the clear retainer is cemented behind the teeth; in other cases, a removable retainer may be used.
