Invisalign Timeline: What to Expect during Treatment

Individuals who desire a straighter smile without the use of conventional braces can take advantage of Invisalign® at our Philadelphia, PA, orthodontic practice. This treatment requires patients to wear a series of aligners for a minimum of 22 hours each day. Over the course of the treatment, the aligners will gradually change in shape or pressure to advance the alignment process. Here, our team at Kellyn Hodges Orthodontics explores the Invisalign timeline and explains what individuals can expect during treatment.

Initial Consultation

The first step in the Invisalign treatment process is a comprehensive assessment at our practice. During this visit, your doctor will perform a thorough evaluation of the teeth, jaw joints, and surrounding oral structures. X-rays and scans may also be taken to assess the underlying roots and supporting jawbone. We will talk with you in detail about your personal orthodontic goals. Once all clinical information has been collected, your doctor will determine if Invisalign is an appropriate treatment option for you.

Each aligner in the series is designed to gradually shift your teeth into a straighter position.

Treatment Planning

If your candidacy is established, we will schedule you for another appointment to begin the treatment planning process. During this visit, your doctor will take digital impressions and use computer imaging to design a personalized treatment plan. This information will then be sent to the Invisalign lab, where a trained technician will fabricate your new aligner trays.

Active Treatment: Progressing Through Your Aligners

In a few weeks, your Invisalign trays will be delivered to our office. Once they arrive, we will schedule you for a visit to ensure they fit properly. The first set of trays will be dispensed and a thorough list of guidelines will be provided. To be effective, your aligners must be worn a minimum of 22 hours daily. Therefore, they should only be removed at meal times or when cleaning the teeth.

About every two weeks, your current aligners will be traded out for the next set in the sequence. The subtle changes in the trays will gradually move the teeth into their desired positions over time. The number of trays necessary for your treatment will depend on the severity of your misalignment.

Retention is essential for maintaining your results.

Because each patient is unique, treatment times can vary significantly for every individual. In most cases, however, patients can achieve their desired goals in about 12 to 18 months. Once treatment is complete, patients can enjoy a smile that is healthier, more balanced, and more beautiful.

At the end of treatment, your doctor will speak with you about retainer options. Retention is essential for maintaining your results. There are several different types of retainers available and your doctor will talk with you in detail about your choices.
