Root Canal Therapy Recovery

When bacteria build up on the surface of the teeth, it can lead to tooth decay, which permanently damages healthy tooth enamel. If left untreated, the bacteria can reach the sensitive nerves and tissues at the center of the tooth, causing a root canal infection.

Root canal therapy removes infected tissues from within the tooth, effectively treating the root canal infection. After the infection has been eliminated, the tooth is filled with a rubbery dental compound, and then capped with a dental crown.

Many people are nervous about root canal therapy, but it is a straightforward procedure that should not cause any significant pain or discomfort.

Patients may, however, experience some mild discomfort as they recover from the procedure. Dr. Kellyn Hodges thoroughly discusses the root canal therapy recovery process with our Philadelphia, PA patients so that they know what to expect after treatment.

How Long Does Recovery Last?

Root canal therapy does not require a significant recovery time. Patients will likely experience some mild side effects, but these should resolve within a few days to a week.

While the patient is going to want to rest immediately after root canal therapy, the side effects should not be significant enough to prohibit them from resuming their usual activities. Patients should be able to go back to work and any other routine activities the day after treatment.

Side Effects of Treatment

After root canal therapy is complete and the anesthetic has worn off, patients may experience some mild discomfort. Over-the-counter pain medication should address any discomfort that is experienced while recovering from root canal therapy. With proper after care, any soreness should be gone within a few days.

Inflammation is another common side effect of root canal therapy. Swelling should be pretty mild, but patients may notice that the gums surrounding the treatment site are slightly raised or tender. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication can help control pain and swelling. Swelling should not last more than a few days.

Care Tips

We will provide patients with explicit care instructions following root canal therapy. These care tips will promote healing and a smooth recovery period.

Some practices that can be especially beneficial following root canal therapy include:

In addition, patients should monitor their recovery. If any unusual side effects develop, or if pain or swelling persist beyond what is normal, it should be reported to Dr. Hodges as soon as possible.
